Talkington Angus Ranch is owned and operated by Shane and Amanda Talkington and their children Abby, Hadley and Cade. Shane is the fourth generation to ranch on the edge of the badlands in south west North Dakota where his great grandfather settled in 1906. Shane added the first registered cattle to the operation in 1998, and that portion of the herd has steadily grown since then.
Our location, environment, and operation dictate that our cowherd is fed an entirely forage based diet, no silage or corn is grown. This leads us to place heavy emphasis on efficient, easy fleshing cows. We strive to produce cattle that excel for disposition, foot and leg structure, and udder quality, and cattle are heavily culled accordingly. We feel fertility is the most economically important trait and the best way to make real progress is to challenge the cowherd. All heifers and registered cows get one chance to be AI’d and then get 45 days with a cleanup bull, no second chances if they aren’t pregnant in that 45 day window. The cows must also wean off a heavy calf with no creep feed. The end product is a huge advantage of Angus cattle and we collect carcass data from our commercial steers every year, which are managed and bred just like our registered herd. In 2014, we achieved a level of 57% and 21% prime. We feel whether you sell by the pound or retain ownership our genetics will make you profitable steers and you can keep replacements with confidence.
